Professional Experience
Hugh McCall is a mediator, arbitrator and lawyer dedicated to helping people understand and deal
effectively with issues of communication and conflict. He has been involved in dispute resolution
in both the public and private sector since 1990.
He has acted as a mediator in disputes which involve partnerships, businesses, insurance,
construction and consumers. He has also acted as a neutral decision maker in a number of areas
including: business; construction; residential tenancies; motor vehicles and municipal bylaw
disputes.
Mr. McCall has coached and mentored other mediators. He is also an instructor of courses on
various aspects of administrative justice for the B.C. Council of Administrative Tribunals and
has introduced students to an interest based perspective on legal problems at the U.B.C. Faculty
of Law.
Mr. McCall is on a number of arbitration rosters and panels including the B.C. Mediator Roster
and the B.C. International Commercial Arbitration Centre's mediation and arbitration panels.
Prior to focusing on dispute resolution, Mr. McCall was involved in the resource industry and
had a private legal practice.
Mr. McCall is fluent in French and English.
Education
Mr. McCall has a B.A. in French Canadian Literature from Laval University, an LL.B. from the
University of British Columbia and significant training in interest based mediation for
commercial, construction and family disputes.
Professional Organizations
Mr. McCall is a member of the Law Society of B.C., the Canadian Bar Association, the B.C. Council
of Administrative Tribunals, the B.C. Arbitration and Mediation Institute, the ADR Institute of
Canada and the Network-Interaction for conflict resolution.
Community Involvement
Among other activities, Hugh has served as Vice-Chair and Treasurer on the Board of Directors of
Choice School for Gifted Children, Chair of the Parent Advisory Council, coached soccer and has
been a Beaver Leader for Scouts Canada.
